New! Vintage Hot Air Balloons

I've been meaning to get some of these antique hot air balloon images ready for a collage sheet for ages now... finally worked on them today. Aren't they fun? I love these, very steampunk. "I used an embossing folder and ink highlight to make the spider web in designer paper which had spiders on it the sentiment was a piece of cardstock from my stash. I cut the Lunagirl image out to have a white border and I distressed that area lightly."

Steampunk Spirit

It's the second Monday of the Steampunk Girls blog challenge, and that means another bit of inspiration from the Moonbeams Design Team.  Michele Storms has created this stunning collaged image that is truly in the steampunk spirit:

"because jules verne is the father of steampunk i started this creation by going online to find a good photo of him and also an original book cover from one of his books.  the cover i used here is “voyages extraordinaire” or “extraordinary voyage.”  this steampunk girl is truly ready for adventure!  she has her luggage and her compass and she herself  is dressed to kill.  the hand and eye of fate in the corner above her suggest an element of danger but her patron saint jules verne is right behind her luggage.  what could go wrong?

"I really enjoyed making this steampunk card.  I put a little bit of everything on it.  Look closely you will see 6 images from Lunagirl and a piece of a background image, some burlap, a piece of rope, and of course a bling embellishment.  I had that piece of background paper on my desk from a previous project-now it is gone, a scrap of rope was there too-now it is gone.  The burlap is half of a piece I had on my table.  This is the way to clean your craft room!   I wish."

"i used the steampunk girls sheet, the carte postale (i'm getting a lot of use out of that sheet!) and fly away home (yeah, i'm finding myself using that a lot also!).  i also used some fun vintage advertising paper i already had along with tissue tape, a clock sticker and a brad to enhance the steampunk feel.  love this challenge theme!"

What Is Steampunk?

What in the world is "steampunk" you may ask? (And some of you have).

Steampunk is one of those things that can be difficult to describe but you know it when you see it. It is related to the neo-Victorian movement but has more to do with funky machinery, gears, gadgetry, etc., inspired by the Victorian interpretation of the then-emerging industrial revolution, especially by wildly imaginative futuristic literature of the era such as Jules Verne and H.G. Wells. Steampunk is imagining the Victorian view of science and technology into the present. What if everything still ran on steam power and was built of brass and iron and wood and leather?

Steampunk: Building a fabulous steam-powered bat-winged flying machine in your study. Airships. Steam engine trains. The Nautilus submarine from Jules Verne. Those giant antique brass diving helmets. Goggles and telescopes and pocket watches. Gears and cogs and gadgets, and elaborate machines with lots of brass and copper and moving parts and engraved instructions. Having these things in your book-lined wood-paneled study (or laboratory). A gadget-enhanced wood-sided leather-upholstered flying car with retractable webbed wings. Mad scientists and eccentric inventors. Aeronauts and aviatrixes. Curious and daring young ladies who have read all the books in their fathers’ scientific libraries. Antique typewriters and calibrating devices. Contraptions and chronometers. Thaumatropes and stereoscopes and difference engines. Building a modern device out of salvaged antique parts. Neo-Victorian dress with a little mad scientist Victorian techie flair. A corset or leather vest accessorized with lace gloves, goggles and a brass laser gun.

Steampunk seems a bit related to cyberpunk but inspired by older technology, and also related to “retro-futurism,” which has to do with how people in the 1930s-1950s imagined the future (think jetpaks, rayguns, Buck Rogers, streamlining, shiny tight metallic clothes, flying saucers) and bringing that aesthetic into contemporary design.

But steampunk is instead inspired by an earlier vision of the future imagined by the Victorians ~ a “future” of amazing technology and progress based on steam power and brass fittings and the aesthetic of their time.

Steampunk subculture has been around for quite a while and is now filtering into the mainstream as a “style,” as such things do.

We're deep into summer now, and I want to feature some items/artists for a "Summer Splurge." And wow, what a wonderful and talented artist we're featuring today.

Bonzie, an independent fashion label in Ireland, creates absolutely gorgeous corsets, neck adornments, handbags and more ~ see the pictures below. They are wonderfully feminine, romantic, gothic, elegant, playful.... I especially like her new wearable art bags (some feature Lunagirl images, plus fabric flowers, lace, other vintage and vintage-inspired elements and embellishments). I have a weakness for handbags!

Truly an indulgence for yourself or a lucky friend ~ and some pieces would be amazing for your wedding ~ but note that Bonzie's custom neck adornments are very reasonably priced for such lovely custom pieces!
