Moon Lore: "Pink Moon"

The moon in April was called the Pink Moon -- not because of the color pink, but in honor of the "pinks" or wild ground phlox that are one of the earliest blooming woodland wildflowers.

Other names for the April moon include Sprouting Grass Moon or Egg Moon.

This month's full moon is on Sunday (20 April). Enjoy the bright moonlit nights this weekend!

The beautiful yellow swallowtail butterflies returned to us this week. We hope to have bird nests soon ~ we have plenty of blackberry and rose briars behind our office, and the cardinals love to nest among them. We have a pair of phoebes looking for a place to nest, and chickadees, titmice, goldfinches, purple finches, wrens, sparrows, mockingbirds, brown thrashers, and fussy bluejays and squawky crows visit daily. The South is a great place for birding! I'm hoping for nesting bluebirds again this year. Thought I would share this lovely photograph of a yellow swallowtail on orange butterfly weed.

Ephemera Find: Birds Eggs Cards!

We just purchased a set of 50 little cigarette cards featuring all kinds of bird eggs! These are so sweet, and I look forward to creating collage sheets and other design elements with them, but I couldn't resist sharing one here for Spring!

The back of each has information about the bird, and they were designed so that you can "push up" the egg so that it stands up on the card. Such a great find, from a shop in England.
