Just for fun, here are two panoramic photographs of a "Bathing Girl Parades." These parades were all the rage in the 1920s. They began as events sponsored by newspapers and local business interests to promote seaside tourist destinations. They eventually grew into the beauty pageants that were popular Mid-Century and continue today. The parade photographed above is from California in 1917, and shows some really interesting swimsuits and beachwear of the day!
The photograph below shows contestants in the Atlantic City Pageant of Inter-City Beauties in 1925. In 1920 the Businessman's League of Atlantic City sponsored a "Fall Frolic," including an elaborate "bathing girl revue," to encourage visitors (and profits) after the end of the summer season. It was a big hit, and the following year they advertised up and down the East Coast for beauty contest winners from other cities to come to Atlantic City to compete for the title of "Miss America."
The 1921 Fall Frolic, which began with the arrival of King Neptune on a barge surrounded by twenty bathing beauties, featured five days of parades and concerts, a fancy dress ball, as
well as seven different bathing parade divisions featuring women, children, men, and
comic costumes. Everyone in town dressed in bathing
suits, including firemen and police! The first "Miss America" was 16-year-old Margaret Gorman of Washington, D.C.
The Atlantic City pageant grew quickly in the next few years. Organizers took pains to stress the wholesomeness and "girl-next-door" qualities of the young contestants in skimpy attire. According to the American Experience website at pbs.org, "From the very beginning, the pageant was confronted with a conflict
between the effort to present an image of innocence and virtue while, at
the same time, promoting a spectacle where women paraded in public in
bathing suits." Nowadays the pageant attempts to balance a "girlpower" attitude and scholarships with the fact that it's basically always been women parading around in revealing clothes!

New CD: Lunagirl Vintage Nudes
Lunagirl is pleased to offer 360 classic, tasteful vintage nude
photo French postcards on CD, restored and ready to browse and print for projects. Brand new today ~ See it here!
Many artists and crafters appreciate these beautiful antique risque images and our customers have requested a collection to use in their card making, altered art work, and other projects.
You'll find a lovely collection of vintage women, most from the Edwardian era or the 1920s Flapper era, some from the earlier Victorian styles. The poses range from serene to sassy! Ladies with veils, big hats, corsets, petticoats, jewelry, costumes. Some post cards have two versions, in different color tints.
Why are they called French postcards? Many early postcards originated in France, including photographs of actresses, children, romantic ladies, and other themes, in addition to the "naughty" ladies (who were very popular with WWI soldiers!). But the term "French postcard" eventually became associated with risqué images (most early 20th century risqué postcards originated in Paris). These images are rather tame by today's standards but were considered quite naughty and even scandalous in their day!

Snowflakes
These are some of the amazing snowflake photomicrographs taken by Vermont farmer, scientist and photographer Wilson Bentley. It was Wilson Bentley who first proposed the idea that no two snowflakes are alike! As snowstorms blanket the East Coast and the Rockies this weekend, look around at all the white, millions and billions of snowflakes, and really think about how every tiny snow crystal is unique and one-of-a-kind!Starting in January of 1885 Bentley took over 5,000 photographs of snow crystals ~ not an easy thing to do before they melt to water or sublimate directly to water vapor! After some experimentation, he developed the technique of capturing snowflakes on black velvet-covered boards and then quickly transferring to a microscope slide to take the photo. His work is an amazing intersection of science and art and a testament to the beauty and wonder of the natural world.

Send New Year Greetings: Revive This Edwardian Tradition!
Sending Happy New Year postcards to family and friends was a very popular tradition with the Victorians and Edwardians (and French ladies of the time) ~ as popular as sending Christmas cards, judging by the great number and variety of New Year cards we find! These charming cards often showed illustrations of children, cherubs, Old Father Time, happy couples, benevolent angels, lucky horseshoes and shamrocks and pigs (yes, a symbol of luck and prosperity), even New Year gnomes who bring wealth and happiness to your home.
Other New Year cards, especially the French ones, featured photographs and the wish for Bonne Annee (a good year) or Heureuse Annee (a happy year), like these from our collection.
You will find a lovely selection of illustrated cards on our Victorian Holidays Volume One CD and beautiful photo cards of children, ladies, and couples on our Christmas New Years Photos CD.
We altered some of the photographs into Christmas cards on the CD, but we left many with new year greetings in French.
I think New Year postcards should make a comeback! They would be a wonderful tradition to revive, especially in these anxious times.
Just print onto cardstock, embellish if you like, and send to wish your loved ones a happy 2011. The best wishes of a friend mean just as much now as they did a hundred years ago in 1911!
