I love the colors in this pretty vintage sewing themed card by Michele Storms ~ that dusky rose pink is so vintage, and I especially like the pink roses, stripes and tape measure with the aqua background. Such a pretty shabby-romantic color combination. Michele used some images from my Lunagirl Sew Shabby Pink collage sheet, combined with other beautiful vintage style imagery and some charming little buttons! I wish buttons were still 10 cents...

Creative Challenge Theme: Vintage SEWING

Time for a new challenge theme! In the past few months, I have re-awakening my love of sewing, thanks to a vintage 1956 Singer sewing machine, just like my mother's discovered at a basement sale last summer. I enjoy cutting and stitching away whenever I get the chance, and buying fabrics is my new guilty pleasure! This is the inspiration for my next blog challenge theme: VINTAGE SEWING.

My machine isn't quite as old as this girl's ~ mine is more mid-century ~ and I don't (usually) wear my pearls when I sew, but she looks like she has as much fun as I do. I hope you have fun with the theme! The SEWING theme can include stitching, quilting, or any kind of needlework actually incorporated into your creation, or it can include images of sewing, quilting, crocheting, knitting, even spinning. Remember that any medium is OK, so in addition to cards, paper crafts, and digital art, feel free to enter pictures of your fabric creations!

Guidelines for the challenge:

I love it when you use Lunagirl images, and I hope you'll go take a look at my collections... but that's not a requirement!  But do remember that if you use a Lunagirl image, you will be entered TWICE in the drawing! I welcome everyone and every style but also want to give a little something extra to my wonderful customers! Most important is have fun, get creative, enjoy vintage.

Love at First Sight

I just had to share my joy and luck at what I bought for $15 at a basement tag sale this weekend: a fabulous vintage Singer sewing machine almost exactly like the one my mother had.

We had checked out all the funky old stuff in the basement sale, not much of interest and mostly overpriced, when I noticed an old mid-century looking case under a table.  I dragged it out and opened it up out of curiosity, expecting to find an old typewriter.  Instead, I found this Singer 401A sewing machine in nearly new condition! Sitting under my mother's sewing table is one of my earliest memories, and when I saw this machine it was like light and music shone down from the heavens! Truly!

I plugged it in and checked it out, trying to contain myself when I asked the man How Much, afraid of what he would say. Fifteen dollars! I turned around quick to hide my glee. Yes, it is mine!  It was waiting for me to find it.

So it works great, is very clean and complete, has the foot pedal and cord in excellent condition.  Probably would have cost me $200-$300 on another day.  These old machines are built to last -- HEAVY and well-designed.  This one is over 50 years old and should last a couple more lifetimes. :-)

Do you sew, Lunagirl, you might ask?  Well, I used to!  And I've wanted a machine for years. My mother sewed alot, and her mother was a seamstress, and now that I have this amazing machine I must start sewing again.  I remembered how to thread it, so that's a start! And luckily I have a manual.
